Why I love GNOME (part 1?)

If someone asked me, "What's the most underrated feature in GNOME?", I'd undoubtedly show them this:

Did you see that?

All I had to do to extract that archive was right-click on it, and hit "Extract here". That's it. I didn't have to open an application and choose where I wanted to extract the archive to or anything. (It's probably the feature I miss the most when I use Windows or OS X...)

Oh yeah, and I forgot the coolest part: If the archive you're extracting contains a bunch of files that aren't grouped in a parent folder, it knows to create a new directory to throw them in (so you won't end up with files littered all over your desktop.) Neato.

What do you think is the most underrated feature in Linux, GNOME, or whatever desktop environment you use?

This was a simple feature. It probably just passes the file you clicked on as an argument to tar. Once that's done nautilus updates by showing you there is a new directory.

The other simple feature missing is "secure" delete by using dd two or three times to overwrite a file with zeroes/ones and using /dev/urandom before unlinking the file (rm).

Hmmm, sounds like a good candidate for a Nautilus script --> http://g-scripts.sourceforge.net/

I'm pretty sure the right click->Extract here thing uses File-Roller (GNOME's archiving program) to do the extraction though because it handles all the same formats (.zip, .tar.gz, .rar, etc...)

WinRar and PowerArchiver 2001 will both add the right-click extract thing in Windows, I believe. Of course these aren't free programs (powerarchiver might be...my university bought a group license for it).

I too have noticed that nautilus/gnome does this and love this feature. There's nothing I hate worse than accidentally extracting 100+ files onto my desktop or home folder.

My favorite feature of gnome is the customizable keyboard shortcuts (though they could make this more powerful).
